Laconian Association of Ottawa and District

Σύλλογος Λακώνων Οττάβας και Περιχώρων

The Laconian Association of Ottawa & District has been active since 1989 and has remained vibrant for more than 31 years, holding various social and cultural events throughout its existence.

The mandate of the Association is to bring together Laconians, Hellenes, and friends from the Ottawa community at large, in a socio-cultural setting to build bonds, preserve traditions and enhance our Greek culture in a Canadian setting.

The association’s objectives are:

  • to organize activities for its members who live in the Ottawa area and bring them
    together;
  • to provide annual scholarships to students of Laconian descent;
  • to support the programs of the Hellenic Community of Ottawa.

We facilitate this through an annual Christmas or Vassilopita party for all members, including gifts for children in attendance, as well as food and drink. The Laconian dance has provided an evening to enjoy our traditional dances and culture. Our annual picnic is a time to spend outside playing games, enjoying souvlakia and other good food provided by the Association and its members.

These events have been part of the long history of the Association’s activities which we look forward to resuming in good health in the near future.

The Association is a supporter of the Hellenic Community of Ottawa and the Formation of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church.

On November 26th, 1943, the Nazis executed 118 Laconians (most of them Spartans). The
Laconian Association of Ottawa, with doxology and reception, commemorates the
memory of these heroes every year.
